A rise in violent crimes in neighborhoods around Old Dominion University (ODU) has prompted school leaders to pledge an “aggressively and jointly” attack on the problem. The call to action came after a non-student was shot on a street dominate by student renters.
Mayor Paul Fraim and ODU Acting President John R. Broderick have asked local police chiefs to work together to increase patrols. Both the city and university police departments are exchanging information and cooperating on investigations.
Police are planning increased car and bicycle patrols around the campus. ODU and a community task force have been asked to study crime prevention in the area.
