In an effort to bolster security, the Oakland Unified School District is installing a high-powered security system that will cover about 30 middle schools and high schools. The installation will include at least 750 new cameras by August 2011.
Nearly half of the project’s $3 million price tag will be covered by a Department of Justice “Secure our Schools” grant, reports The Oakland Tribune. The other half was obtained through the district’s modernization fund.
The cameras will focus on school hallways, gymnasiums and surrounding streets. The Oakland Police Department as well as authorized school district members will have access to the video surveillance. However, campus security officers and principals will have limited access to the security footage, according to the report.
