NYPD to Use Velcro Handcuffs on Disorderly School Children

NEW YORK CITY
Published: February 16, 2009

The New York Police Department (NYPD) has instituted a new program that will use Velcro handcuffs as an alternative to restraining a violent child with metal handcuffs. Unruly children at nearly two dozen schools will be subject to the new restraints starting in March.

The police are expected to only use the cuffs when a child is at risk for hurting himself or another. The alternative restraints come after a 5 year old was controlled with metal handcuffs after an alleged violent temper tantrum.
