Several school in Albany, N.Y., are using part of a $6 million federal grant to help fight against gang recruiting among its students.
The 13-week gang prevention program is targeted toward the schools’ sixth graders. The program is being funded through part of the Safe Schools-Healthy Students federal grant, which covers mental health, juvenile justice, substance abuse, early childhood education and family advocacy.
According to school officials, the program will educate students on good choices to help steer them away from a life of crime. Timesunion.com reports Albany police Lt. Kevin Connolly saying police officers in schools will teach kids to see them as role models instead of as the enemy.
