NY City Council Passes Student Safety Act

NEW YORK — The New York City Council approved the Student Safety Act on Dec. 20, which will require the police department and the department of education to report to the city council on matters concerning school safety. The legislation was approved with a vote of 47 to 0.

The bill will mandate the reporting of suspensions, arrests and other disciplinary action to the city council. The data will be broken down by race, gender, age and whether or not the student is an English language learner, the Gotham Gazette reports.

City council members believe the bill will help to identify disciplinary problems. The approval comes one week after a New York teacher miscarried while breaking up a classroom fight.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg is expected to sign the bill.
