Early next year, San Mateo Medical Center will begin treating some severely mentally ill prison inmates.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, the tentative plan would allow for non-violent prisoners to be treated in the locked psychiatric ward of the hospital.

Currently, the San Mateo County’s main jail has two hospital beds, which cost about $1 million per year to operate. Those beds will continue to be used, but only for violent inmates.
