NHTSA Rejects Petition to Require Seat Belts on Buses

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has again rejected a petition for a federal requirement that school buses be equipped with seat belts.

NHTSA said that it had not found a safety problem supporting the federal requirement for lap/shoulder belts on large school buses, Occupational Health and Safety Online reports. The administration also concluded that the decision to install seat belts should be left to state and local jurisdictions.

The petitioners included the National Coalition for School Bus Safety, Public Citizen, Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety, Consumers Union, the Center for Auto Safety and more.
