The ongoing threat of a terrorist attack in the United States has law enforcement officials on their toes, especially when it comes to large gatherings such as sporting events.
The NFL has sworn by the safety plan in place for Super Bowl 50, however a series of attacks on fiber optic systems in California have the FBI and U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) wondering if a “more complex plot” against the game is in the works, according to a memo obtained by NBC Washington.
Super Bowl 50 is slated for Feb. 7 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.
The memo also lists drones and lone wolf attackers as other areas of concern.

The FBI and DHS “have no information to indicate any specific, credible threats to or associated with Super Bowl 50 or related events,” but the severed fiber optic cables raise concern levels over those testing and prodding “network durability.”
NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy is confident in the event security plan for Super Bowl 50.
“We have been working for more than a year with our law enforcement partners at the federal, state and local level in preparation for Super Bowl 50,” McCarthy said, noting the Super Bowl is constantly under a “heightened state of alert” ever since Sept. 11, 2001.
