NEW YORK — State Education Department officials posted incorrect data on an official Web site that falsely suggested that city public schools have become safer.
The state Web site showed that violent and disruptive behavior at state public schools had dropped 36 percent from 2009 to last year, the New York Daily News reports. Department officials admitted Monday that they don’t have an accurate tally of the numbers.
The misinformation also may have led to an underestimation of the number of “persistently dangerous” public schools. Such schools prompt an intervention and students are allowed to transfer out.
