PHILLIPSBURG, N.J.—Fourteen security officers were laid off by the Phillipsburg School Board in an effort to save $90,000.
The board also unanimously approved the 2010-11 budget, which adopts a $50.9 million spending plan, reports Lehighvalleylive.com.
In a 6-3 vote, board members voted to lay off security workers. Board members said the district is looking into other options for school security, including hiring a private firm. By using private guards, the district would not be responsible for the guards’ health benefits.
Moreover, layoffs for 10 teachers, five staff members and the district’s director of physical education and discipline have been formalized. The positions were among $800,000 in cuts ordered in March by Warren County Executive Superintendent Kevin Brennan.
