N.D. School Superintendent Resigns After Bringing Gun on Campus

Published: October 9, 2013

TIOGA, N.D. — The superintendent for the Tioga School Board has resigned after he brought a gun to school to protect himself.

D’Wayne Johnston wrote a memo to staff that he had a weapon on school property on Oct. 1, GrandForksHerald.com reports. He said he had the firearm because of a threat from a boy that resulted in the student’s expulsion, the Associated Press reports. He now says he should have reported the issue to police rather than carry a gun to the high school the day after the confrontation.

The school board accepted Johnston’s resignation, which will take effect June 30, 2014, on Friday.

It is unclear if Johnston will face criminal charges.
