DURHAM, N.C. — An early morning fire Nov. 6 at the Durham Regional Hospital resulted in the death of one patient, while three others suffered slight injuries.
Firefighters responded to a report of an explosion on the sixth floor of the hospital, which provides care for critical and complex cases, reports the Associated Press. When fire officials arrived at the scene, they discovered that there had been no explosion and the hospital sprinkler system had extinguished the fire.
Although the hospital began operating normally several hours after the incident, some of the patients on the sixth floor were moved because of flooding caused by the sprinklers. Authorities are still investigating what caused the fire.
