CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Effective July 1, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) may have to cut its security resource officers (SROs) due to a lack of funds.
As many as 50 SROs monitor the district’s schools. Each year, the city of Charlotte gives the district money for SROs to patrol schools; however, this year, that is set to change. The shift raises concern among district officials, as CMS will add 3,000 students in the fall, WSOCTV.com reports.
Meanwhile, state lawmakers have filed a house bill to spend $34 million on school security measures. However, while waiting to see if the legislation passes, Charlotte Mayor Pro Tem Patrick Cannon says the city needs to start looking for $800,000 to help the district.
