A third of the school districts in North Carolina failed to meet a state deadline to give first responders information about their school layouts.
North Carolina’s Department of Public Safety had set a June 1 deadline for all districts to submit digital blueprints of their schools to local and state emergency management officials, according to wral.com. But 38 of the state’s 115 districts handed over only a portion or none of their blueprints in a move state officials are calling dangerous.
The blueprints will be used by first responders in case of emergencies at the schools. Many times emergency personnel are unfamiliar with school layouts.
The June 1 deadline was imposed by state lawmakers last year in hopes of improving emergency response.
Many of the 38 schools are pushing to get the information before the start of the new school year.
