EDMONTON, Alberta, Canada – First degree murder suspect Christopher Nagel, 36, escaped from University of Alberta Hospital security officers Tuesday night.

The incident began when he told an officer guarding him he needed to use the restroom. The officer removed Nagel’s restraints and allowed him to enter the bathroom without an escort, reports iNews880.com. When he didn’t exit, the officer checked on him, only to find the suspect had left through another door to an adjacent room.

Police and hospital security officers searched for Nagel for five hours before finding him on the fifth floor of the hospital.

Justice Minister and Solicitor General Jonathan Denis apologized for the incident and said a report on what happened would be completed next week, reports CBCNews.ca.
