PITTSBURGH — Police plan to charge a 22-year-old mother for attempting to smother her four-month-old son at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Authorities found the infant to be limp with abnormal breathing in the intensive care unit on Oct. 20, TribLive.com reports. The child’s mother, Rachel Nelson, admitted to police that she held the infant so tight against her chest that he stopped breathing.
Court documents noted that Nelson blocked the view of a surveillance camera during the incident, according to CBS Pittsburgh.
The child is now in stable condition and under protective custody. Police issued a warrant for Nelson, who is being evaluated at Western Psychiatric Institute & Clinic.
