BERKELEY, Calif. — The mother of a UC Berkeley student who suffered brain damage in 2010 after overdosing on drugs has filed a lawsuit against the University of California regents and the Berkeley Student Cooperative, claiming they knew of the rampant drug use in the campus residence where her son lived but did not protect students.
John Bennett Gibson was allegedly given illegal drugs by his roommate, who saw that Gibson “did not appear to be breathing and had bluish lips” by 11 a.m. on March 18, 2010, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. However, the roommate did not call 911 until 1 p.m.
Madelyn Bennett, Gibson’s mother, claims in the suit that the Berkeley Student Cooperative established house rules that discouraged student from promptly calling police or paramedics by requiring residences to ask permission from house leaders to make the calls.
