Mom Files Lawsuit After Son Drowns at School Retreat

ALGONQUIN, Ill.
Published: November 24, 2008

The mother of Melvin Choice III, a student of North Lawndale College Preparatory High School, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the school and a YMCA camp after her son drowned at a school retreat.

Choice, along with two other students – Jimmy Avant, 18, and Adrian Alexander Jones, 16 – downed Nov. 14 at the school-sponsored leadership retreat at Fox River in Algonquin, Ill., after their paddleboats sank. The lawsuit alleges the defendants failed to secure paddleboats or warn that the boat’s plugs had been removed for the winter.

The lawsuit is the first filed since the tragedy.
