MiraCosta Community College to Arm Officers

Published: February 22, 2006

OCEANSIDE – Despite objections by some students and members of its faculty, MiraCosta Community College’s governing board has agreed to arm its police force.

On Feb. 21, the board voted 6-1 to allow campus police to carry guns. Previously, MiraCosta was the only community college in San Diego County with unarmed police.

One survey of students indicated that a slight majority preferred the police to remain unarmed, while another poll of faculty members showed teachers preferred that campus law enforcement officers carry guns.

Currently, campus police carry stun guns. The college is considering spending $10,000 on firearms and $6,000 on new TASERs.
