MINNEAPOLIS – A newborn male infant born three weeks early was left in critical condition after oxygen ignited inside a special hood worn by the infant. The fire burned the boy’s head and face.
The boy, who weighs 8 pounds, was just 12 hours old when he was burned, officials said. He was wearing the oxygen hood over his face to receive additional oxygen. Once the fire started, nurses on hand immediately put out the flame.
Authorities are investigating the incident, and refused to give the brand of the oxygen hood and warmer due to the investigation.
Dr. Leslie Smith said the infant has second- and third-degree burns on his head, shoulders, top of his hands and part of his face. Smith believes the child will survive. He was being treated with fluids and medication, and breathing through a ventilator. She added that the baby should have a normal life, as he is still able to use his hands and fingers.
An attorney for the family, whose name has not been released, said the family has not yet considered legal action.
