MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota’s legislature is considering a bill that would require public schools increase the number of lockdown drills they conduct every year.
The moves comes as the state observes the anniversary of the massacre at Red Lake High School in northwestern Minnesota in which a teacher, school security guard and five students were killed by a teenage gunman. The suspect was also killed.
If the bill passes, the number of required lockdown drills would be increased to five. The number of fire drills would be reduced from nine to five.
The legislation has moved through committee without protest and is now supported by Gov. Tim Pawlenty. Information on House File 2492 can be found at www.house.mn.
