OMAHA, Neb. – A 26-year-old middle school math teacher who had an affair with one of her students and then fled to Mexico with him was sentenced to six years in jail Sept. 29.
Kelsey Peterson, who taught at Lexington Middle School, began having sex with the then 12-year-old student in November 2006. After the school superintendent confronted her about allegations of an inappropriate relationship last October, Peterson and the student went to Mexico, where she was arrested for kidnapping, child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
When Peterson gets out of prison, she will have to register as a sex offender. It is doubtful that she will be able to teach in schools again.
