Michigan University Changes Policies after Student Arrest

Saginaw Valley State University President Donald J. Bachand says he has been busy trying to improve the school in recent months.

Saginaw Valley State University will create programs and adjust its campus policing practices after an internal review following the arrest of a student in February.

University President Donald J. Bachand made the announcement August 18 after the reviews completion, according to mlive.com.

One change will be the creation of an advisory committee that gives input to the department to better achieve its community policing goals. The committee will consist of both campus and local community members.

Other changes include the review of criminal charges brought by campus police before they are referred to a prosecutor and the addition of more campus events to increase the department’s contact with the university community.

The university’s internal review was sparked by the arrest and felony charge of graduate student DaJuawn Wallace, who drove a mile and a half before pulling over for a police cruiser with its lights on. The charges against Wallace were later dismissed after he claimed he was waiting for a well-lit area to stop.
