Meningitis Scare Hits N.Y. College Campus

Nearly 50 Iona College students are being tested for bacterial meningitis after a fellow student fell ill earlier last week. The students will be monitored for signs of the disease, which often presents itself with flu-like symptoms.

Bacterial meningitis has a 10 to 15 percent fatality rate. Those who survive may also have serious side effects such as lost of limbs, neurological effects and hearing loss.
