GARDNER, Mass. – The Mount Wachusett Community College board of trustees voted to allow the school’s police officers to carry firearms on campus.

The vote allows for campus police to begin carrying firearms on Jan. 1, 2016, Sentinel & Enterprise reported.

All of the department’s 13 officers must receive training at the Massachusetts State Police Academy and earn certification before they can carry firearms on campus. Roughly half of the department work as part-time police officers in other communities and already have firearm certification.

Initially, MWCC President Daniel Asquino opposed arming campus police. However, he reversed his decision because of concerns over recent mass shootings.
