BOSTON – A Massachusetts House committee has endorsed a bill that would allow state and community college campus police to issue tickets.
Currently, most officers do not have the authority to write moving-violation tickets to drivers on college campuses. That power was lost approximately two years ago when the state registry of motor vehicles stopped issuing citation books to state and community college police. The officers could no longer issue tickets when they ran out of the books.
According to a registry spokesperson, the law does not indicate that state and community college police have the authority to issue citations. Officers at the University of Massachusetts, however, do have that power.
The bill will now go to the state’s House, Senate and governor for approval.
