Endicott College officially announced on July 7 the formation of a Public Safety Department with the goal of improving student safety.

The Beverly, Massachusetts college previously had a Campus Safety Office with no sworn police officers. The new department’s mission is to provide “a safe and secure educational environment for all students, faculty, staff, administrators, visitors and guests.”

The department is comprised of both sworn and non-sworn personnel. The sworn police officers completed training in the Massachusetts Reserve Police Academy and can make arrests, according to Beverly.wickedlocal.com.

Officers have also been trained as first responders and in some cases emergency medical technicians.
