WESTON, Fla. – Police are investigating why an elderly man shot and killed his hospitalized wife before shooting himself on June 4.
The incident occurred just before 11 a.m. at the Cleveland Clinic hospital. Alberto Volinsky, 86, committed murder-suicide in the private forth floor room where his 87-year-old wife, Hildegard Volinsky, was staying.
According to Sun-Sentinal.com, just before the shooting, the wife had refused to have a feeding tube inserted and her husband supported her decision. Shortly after that, the hospital employees left the room. People then heard two shots fired. When staff members returned to the couple, both were dead.
Although Hildegard Volinsky was not terminally ill, she had suffered chronic health problems. She was admitted to the hospital’s intensive-care unit four days before the incident. The previous day she was moved to a private room where the shooting occurred.
According to a Cleveland Clinic spokesperson, all visitors must check in and are provided passes. Weapons are not allowed in the hospital.
The medical center was not shut down after the shooting, but Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies and hospital employees were posted at the main entrances.
