Man Accused of Holding 11 Students Hostage Arraigned

BELFAST, Maine – The 55-year-old man who held 11 fifth-grade students hostage Oct. 31 has been charged with kidnapping, according to the Associated Press.

Randall Hoffland had been running from police since Oct. 23 when he allegedly pointed a gun at a police officer who pulled him over at a seat belt safety roadblock. After being on the run, Hoffland entered a classroom at Stockton Springs Elementary School and held 11 students hostage at gunpoint.

No one was injured during the incident.

A judge set Hoffland’s bail at $300,000 cash or $1.1 million in real estate. Additionally, the judge approved a defense request that the suspect undergo a psychological evaluation.

In addition to kidnapping, Hoffland was charged with burglary and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon.
