In an attempt to stop sexual assault the Iowa Board of Regents may create what they called the Campus Safety and Security Subcommittee.
Iowa’s Board of Regents is a nine person group that “enhances the quality of life for Iowans by maintaining the educational quality, accessibility, and public service activities” of the five public schools it governs, according to its website.
The board stressed in their recent agenda meeting that ensuring campus security will require “training to help identify and prevent sexual violence, harassment and other misconduct,” according to kcrg.com.
The proposed Campus Safety and Security Subcommittee would review reports and issues at the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa. The subcommittee would meet twice a year and include representatives from all state universities and the state schools for the deaf and visually impaired.
The subcommittee would not be the first of its kind formed in the state. The University of Iowa created a student advisory committee on sexual misconduct last year in response to 11 reports of sexual assault to campus police in a nine month span. The reports, along with a student complaint, sparked an investigation by the Office for Civil Rights that is ongoing.
