L.A. Officials Investigate Possible ‘Patient Dumping’ by Nevada Hospital

LOS ANGELES – City officials have launched a probe to determine if Nevada’s primary state psychiatric hospital has bused hundreds of mentally ill patients to other cities in the nation, more than 200 of whom have landed in Los Angeles.

The Sacramento Bee reports that since 2008, Las Vegas’ Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital has transported by Greyhound bus more than 1,500 patients to other cities and states. In addition to the patients sent to Los Angeles, about 70 were bused to San Diego County and 19 to Sacramento.

San Francisco is also investigating the allegations, having requested documentation from Nevada on the practice, reports the Los Angeles Times. Local homeless shelters have also been called on to help gather information.
