Liberty U. to Continue Gun Ban

Liberty University’s (LU) board of trustees has rejected a proposal that would allow people with concealed handgun permits to carry their weapons on campus. Only the school’s police officers are allowed to have firearms.

On March 3, LU’s board decided to continue the ban because the campus has its own police force and crime hasn’t been an issue. The board did indicate, however, that it would be willing to revisit the issue at a later date.

A petition signed by 597 students, parents and alumni prompted the board to consider lifting the ban. According to Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr., however, the majority of those on campus did not support a change in the school’s current policy.
