WICHITA, Kan. — A lawsuit against St. John’s Military School has revealed that the institution has received 339 verbal and written complaints from students in the past five years, claiming that they were beaten, hazed, harassed or abused.
As many as 11 former cadets and their families from California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Tennessee and Texas filed the lawsuit against the military school. The plaintiffs also state that the school allows higher-ranking cadets to discipline other students and encourages physical and mental abuse. Furthermore, the lawsuit claims school officials intentionally fail to supervise students, which allows the abuse to persist, the Associated Press reports.
For its part, school officials say the number of complaints exhibits the institution’s concern for student safety and welfare. The military school maintains that it keeps records of each complaint, including the most minor, and investigates and corrects them.
