LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — In a 29-3 vote, Arkansas senators have approved a proposal that allows private colleges and universities to maintain a law enforcement agency with arrest and detention powers. The legislation now awaits approval from Gov. Mike Beebe.
Supporters of the measure believe it will make private colleges and universities safer to have their own police agencies. However, the opposition has voiced concerns about the precedent of giving police powers to private entities, the Associated Press reports.
