BATON ROUGE, La. – A House committee proposed that college students should be allowed to carry concealed weapons on campus to protect themselves and others.
House Bill 199, which was proposed May 1, was written by State Rep. Ernest Wooten, D – Belle Chasse and chairman of the House Criminal Justice Committee
Supporters said being allowed to carry weapons on the campus would have helped to stop recent campus shootings that have occurred throughout the country.
The opposition, which includes members of campus police and campus administration throughout the state, think students will use the weapons against each other instead of using them for protection.
Applicants seeking to obtain a concealed weapon must be 21 years old and submit to a background check.
