Bill Requires Sex Offenders to Register With Campus PD
BATON ROUGE, La. — A bill that would require sex offenders who attend or work at public universities to register with campus law enforcement agencies was recently introduced by a lawmaker from Lafourche Parish. Currently, sex offenders must register with the sheriff of the parish in which they live, the chief of police if applicable and the sheriff of the parishes where they work and attend school.
Rep. Truck Gisclair, D-Larose, who introduced the legislation, says that campuses are changing, Houmatoday.com reports. Growing numbers of charter schools and lab schools, as well as campus day care centers mean that minors are more often on the same campus as adults.
When a sex offender registers with law enforcement agencies, they must pay a $60 fee. House Bill 13 will not duplicate the fee, according to Gisclair.
Failing to register results in a $1,000 fine and two and to 10 years in prison for first offenders. More than one offense will result in harsher penalties.
