NEWPORT, Ky. — Several professors at Northern Kentucky University (NKU) continued to lecture even after a fire alarm sounded in a campus building. Ignoring a fire alarm can result in a disorderly conduct charge in the second degree.
While some students and staff exited Founders Hall, other students stayed in the building to listen to their professors who were still teaching class, the Northerner reports. It was not known at the time that the alarm had been triggered by an ongoing storm.
According to NKU Chief of Police Jason Willis, it is unlikely that any of the professors or students who remained behind would be charged with disorderly conduct. Many students were concerned that professors would put them in a position to choose between adhering to emergency procedures and attending an ongoing class.
