An active shooter situation at a Kirkersville, Ohio nursing and rehabilitation center this morning has been neutralized.
A Kirkersville police officer was shot while responding to the incident at the Pine Kirk Care Center, reports nbc4i.com. The officer’s condition is unknown.
Multiple people were hospitalized as a result of the incident, although the scene is now secure, according to abc6.
Few details have been released about the incident, but multiple law enforcement patrol cars, ambulances and medical helicopters responded to the seen after a 911 caller reported an active shooter.
An employee at the nursing home also reportedly texted her relatives informing them there was an active shooter situation and she was sheltering in place inside the building. Nbc4i reports that employee is now outside the building and safe.
Nearby Kirkersville Elementary School went on lockdown after the reports. All Kirkersville Elementary students were on school buses when the situation began and were taken to Watkins Middle School.
Kirkersville is a small village in Licking County about 40 miles east of Columbus. It had a population of 525 in 2010.
About 24 residents live in the Pine Kirk Care Center where the incident took place.
