ROCKY MOUNT, Va. — A judge sharply reduced the damages awarded to two families who sued the state of Virginia for negligence in the 2007 mass shooting at Virginia Tech.
Each family will now be awarded $100,000, the statutory cap on damages against the state, the Associated Press reports. Initially, jurors awarded the families $4 million each.
The lawsuit, filed by the families of two shooting victims, argued that the university waited too long before alerting the campus community of the initial shootings.
