WASHINGTON — Since the deadly shooting earlier this month at Sandy Hook Elementary School, there have been many calls to increase armed police presence in schools. However, the Justice Policy Institute (JPI) maintains that bolstering law enforcement in schools is not an effective public safety response.
In JPI’s research report titled “Education Under Arrest,” the group states that having law enforcement in schools is not the best nor most cost-effective way to protect the campus community and maintain a productive learning environment. Rather, it can lead to more youth becoming involved in the juvenile justice system for “often minor misbehavior,” according to the study.
