DES MOINES, Iowa – The Virginia Tech shootings last April prompted officials in Iowa universities to rethink their stance on arming campus police.
Currently officers are allowed to have weapons in their office, but they cannot carry them. Public safety directors at the University of Iowa, the University of Northern Iowa and Iowa State have recommended that all campus police be armed so they can adequately protect the community.
The Board of Regents is scheduled to discuss campus security at a meeting Aug. 1, but they will not make a final decision about arming campus police until the fall.
