Increasing Attacks on Oregon State Hospital Staff Raise Concern

Oregon State Hospital workers are concerned over the rising number of attacks on staff members by mentally ill patients.

In the first 10 months of 2008, there were 323 reported injuries to staff at the state mental hospital caused by patients, according to the Associated Press.  The Oregon State Police had received more calls from the hospital than from the state prison in 2007 and 2008.

Hospital administrators have hired more aides for troubled wards and have added security staff. The hospital will open a maximum-security unit for about a dozen violent female patients next month. The group of women is allegedly responsible for creating a large share of trouble at the hospital.
