Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo Named CSC Texas Keynote Speaker

Chief Acevedo will discuss emergency planning, preparedness and response during severe weather incidents and the importance of interagency communication.

The Campus Safety Conference is pleased to announce that Chief Art Acevedo with the Houston Police Department will be delivering the keynote address, Hurricane Harvey: A Lesson in Leadership and Emergency Management, at our Texas conference taking place June 24-26, 2018, at the Omni Mandalay Hotel at Las Colinas in Irving, Texas.

The Campus Safety Conference is the premier event for K-12 schools and university police agencies, administrators and campus stakeholders who are actively engaged in the development and implementation of safety procedures and responsive strategies.

Chief Acevedo’s keynote presentation will highlight:

  • Emergency planning, preparedness and response during severe weather incidents
  • The importance of interagency communication and planning prior to and leading up to an event
  • How to effectively work with other campus law enforcement agencies to improve campus safety and security
  • Examples of incidents that were prevented or mitigated as a result of the HPD, schools and/or universities working together

Chief Acevedo was sworn-in as Chief on November 30, 2016, and leads the department’s 5,200 sworn law enforcement officers and 1,200 civilian support personnel. He also holds various leadership positions with the Major Cities Chiefs Association and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

Acevedo believes good communication is vital for a successful community and steadily works to strengthen the bond between the community and its police department. An advocate for community policing, Chief Acevedo refers to the proven practice as “Relational Policing”, an opportunity to forge a relationship with each citizen an officer comes in contact with.

In addition to Chief Acevedo’s keynote presentation, the conference will feature a variety of educational and interactive sessions, case studies and panels on hot topics including:

  • Clery/Title IX compliance
  • K-12 school active shooters
  • Campus administration
  • Campus emergency management

Attendees will also be able to network with their peers and preview a variety of products and services from today’s top security and law enforcement solutions.

The Campus Safety Conference will also be hosted in Herndon, Va., from July 18-20 and in Pasadena, Calif., from July 30-Aug. 1.
