Hospitals Review Policies After Patients Go Missing

ALBERTA — Calgary hospitals are re-evaluating how they monitor high-risk patients after several seniors went missing from Rockyview General Hospital, in one case resulting in a fatality.

On July 20, the body of a 68-year-old patient with dementia was pulled from a reservoir two days after he went missing, the Calgary Herald reports. Two other patients went missing this week, but were found alive. The incidents come at a time when Alberta Health Services has launched an investigation into the death of 64-year-old Wendy Miller, who choked on food July 25 at Rockyview.

Rockyview has a larger in-patient population with some form of cognitive impairment than other hospitals, according to Alberta Health Services Calgary Zone Medical Director Dr. Francois Belanger.
