SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – In an effort to enhance security, Saratoga Hospital has begun tagging infants and children with tiny radio transmitters.
Fitting around a baby’s ankle or a child’s wrist, the Hugs security system tags will lock doors and set off an alarm in the event they are taken too close to exit doors in the unit. The tags will also activate the alarm if they have not been detected within a specific amount of time. They are individually monitored on a continuous basis and also perform self-checks for mechanical problems or low batteries.
The tags will be used in the maternity and pediatric units. According to a Saratogian report, the new security system was not implemented in reaction to any incidents, only to enhance security.
