MOU Allows Health System to Investigate Misdemeanors

PASCAGOULA, Miss. — The security department at Singing River Health System has signed a memorandum of understanding with the city and county law enforcement to formalize an arrangement that allows hospital police to investigate misdemeanors and city or county police to take the lead on felonies.

According to Pascagoula Police Chief Kenny Johnson, the arrangement has been in effect for years, The Mississippi Press reports. The hospital recently completed the process to gain designation from the state for its security department to become a campus police department. This allows hospital police officers to make arrests on hospital property.

Pascagoula and Ocean Springs officials recently approved the memorandum. Hospital security already has similar agreements with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and police departments in Moss Point and Gautier.
