MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) has awarded its Medal of Merit to John Kornock of Parker Adventist Hospital, Parker, Colo., for rescuing a patient who was in cardiac arrest. Kornock was honored at the association’s 42nd Annual General Meeting held in Myrtle Beach, S.C., May 2-5.

While Ed Flageolle’s wife ran into the hospital, he went into cardiac arrest and, somehow, the car doors became locked, according to HSS Insights. Kornock, who was off-duty but attending training at the hospital, used a rock and his fist, which he injured in the effort, and broke into the car. He was then able to open the passenger door for the ED staff. Although Flageolle had been without a pulse for about four minutes, he was revived by medical personnel and was able to go home about two weeks later.

Several other awards were presented to hospital security professionals, security departments and institutions for their work in advancing hospital public safety:

  • The Distinguished Chapter award was presented to the Connecticut Chapter of the IAHSS
  • The Russell L. Colling Medal for Literary Achievement was presented to Bryan Warren, CHPA of the Carolinas Healthcare System, Charlotte, N.C.
  • Lindberg Bell Program of Distinction award was presented to the Cleveland Clinic of Brecksville, Ohio and New Hampshire Veterans Home, Tilton, N.H.
  • The Distinguished Lifeworks Medal was awarded to Edwin Stedman, CHPA of South Easton, Mass.

Next year’s Annual General Meeting will take place in Toronto, May 22-25, 2011. For more information, visit www.iahss.org.
