SANFORD, Fla. – Central Florida Regional Hospital has been fined $10,000 for the negligent security that allowed a newborn to be abducted from the maternity ward.
On March 28, Jennifer Latham dressed as a hospital employee and kidnapped a newborn infant to pass off as her own. Later, hospital officials determined that a malfunctioning door locking system allowed Latham to kidnap the child. When a tagged baby gets close to the entrance, the door is supposed to lock. However, during the incident, the door did not lock.
The newborn was located several hours later. Thirty-nine-year-old Latham still awaits trial.
