A Kaiser Permanente hospital, based in California, fired 15 employees and reprimanded eight others for improperly accessing the personal medical files of Nadya Suleman, a woman who gave birth to octuplets in January, according to Computerworld.com.
In addition to the 15 terminated employees, Kaiser representatives reprimanded eight more for wrongly accessing Suleman’s records. The unauthorized viewing of Suleman’s medical records violates Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) policies. A spokesman for the hospital said the breaches have been reported to the California Department of Public Health.
Hospital officials notified Suleman of the breach on March 21. Suleman has no plans to sue the hospital over the data breaches, according to Computerworld.com.
