Hospital Employee Fired for Accessing Nearly 10K Patient Records

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Holy Cross Hospital has fired one of its employees for inappropriately accessing almost 10,000 patient records.

The terminated worker allegedly accessed information from about 9,900 patients between November 2011 and August 2013. The data included patient names, dates of birth, addresses and Social Security numbers, NBC 6 reports.

Hospital officials believe the former employee planned to use the information to file fraudulent tax returns. Holy Cross Hospital has notified affected patients through mail and has offered free credit monitoring services.
